The up-and-coming Chinese smartphone producer takes controversially bold marketing to new heights while remaining unusually tight-lipped in regards to their prospective first mid-range handheld.
Just when you thought Pete Lau’s rapidly growing army of mobile innovators couldn’t possibly shock or surprise with shameless attempts at viral publicity campaigns anymore, the company’s Twitter handlers invoked “the 2016 Flagship Killer”, also thanking a hefty roster of “partners”.
Qualcomm, JDI, Toshiba, Texas Instruments, Ricoh, Fairchild Semiconductor, even Samsung apparently helped make the OnePlus 2 happen. But 2016 flagship killer?! Come on now, that’s either a typo or an open invitation to mockery.
First and foremost, shouldn’t 2016 in theory bring a OnePlus 3 to light? If so, will that flagship succumb to this one too? Or do these empty claims only apply to rival OEMs? Not to forget the Samsung Galaxy Note 5s, Huawei Nexuses and LG G4 Pros of tomorrow, all threatening OnePlus 2’s high-end “domination” by 2015’s end.
Speaking of 2015 release plans, outfit founder and CEO Pete Lau slipped an intriguing nugget in a recent talk with a Romanian news publication. Remember the oft-rumored but never confirmed OnePlus One “Mini?” Well, it’s as good as confirmed now.
Not in name, and not in diminutive nature, yet given the “full-sized” 2 is so great, it’s obvious the other phone “planned” for this year has more modest goals. A lower price, smaller display and overall humbler specifications presumably too.
Itching to hear some numbers, maybe an ETA or rough MSRP estimate? Details are only “coming soon”, we’re afraid. Until then, rejoice upon recapping the super-duper-premium features of the OnePlus 2 gradually revealed of late.
